The Night Owl's Guide to Hosting in Vancouver

January 15, 2025 · 6 min read

It's 10 PM on a Friday. The group chat is popping off. Someone says “let's just come to yours” — and suddenly you're hosting. In Vancouver, this is practically a sport. The bars close early and the nights run long, which means someone's apartment is always the last venue standing.

Whether you're a seasoned host or completely winging it, here's everything you need to pull off a great late-night gathering without leaving your building.

Stock the Right Bottles

You don't need a full bar — you need a smart one. The goal is to cover the main taste profiles so everyone has an option they actually enjoy. A solid late-night spread looks something like this:

  • Vodka

The crowd-pleaser. Mixes with almost anything — cranberry, orange juice, soda, lemonade. Get a 1.75L and you're set.

  • Whisky or Rum

For the people who actually have opinions about their drinks. Crown Royal or Captain Morgan will satisfy most.

  • Beer (a case)

Always in demand. People grab a beer between drinks or when they don't want to think. Don't skip this.

  • Wine (2 bottles)

Red for the couch crowd, white for the kitchen counter crowd. You know who they are.

  • Coolers or Seltzers

For guests who don't really drink but want something in their hand. Also clutch mid-night.

Mixers Matter More Than You Think

A great bottle goes nowhere without the right mixers. Stock your fridge with cranberry juice, orange juice, ginger ale, soda water, and Coke. That covers roughly 80% of what anyone will ask for. Add a bag of ice and a few limes and you're genuinely set.

The one thing most people forget? Cups. Specifically, enough cups. Nothing kills the vibe faster than guests sharing or improvising with mugs.

Set the Vibe, Not Just the Bar

The drinks are only half of it. Here's what actually separates a great host from someone who just opened their apartment:

  • Lighting is everything. Overhead lights off. Lamps, candles, fairy lights — whatever you have. It costs nothing and transforms the room.
  • A playlist, not shuffle. Put on something intentional. A good playlist that fits the vibe is one of the most underrated things a host can do.
  • Snacks are mandatory. Chips, cheese, crackers — anything. People drink better when they're eating.
  • Clear the living room floor. People move around, especially as the night goes on. Give them space.

When You Run Out

It happens to every host. You planned for eight people and fourteen showed up. Or the night went longer than expected. Either way, you're suddenly out of vodka at 1 AM and nobody wants to leave.

That's exactly why we exist. Midnight Express has been running alcohol delivery across Vancouver since before Uber Eats existed. Call us, tell us what you need, and we'll have it at your door in under 12 minutes. No leaving the party. No killing the vibe.

Running low? We've got you.

Delivery to Downtown, Yaletown, West End, Kitsilano, and more. Open until 5–6 AM, every night.
